“From Arms and Legs to a Body of Resistance”
Forthcoming: a nonfiction book on the democracy movement of Hong Kong, my hometown. Beyond the teargas and rubber bullets, I want to tell our movement’s stories through the music we played, the visual art we created, the food we fed each other. I interviewed more than 80 of my comrades—aged 13 to 94—friends and acquaintances with whom I shared our struggle’s love, joy, and solidarity.
Left: a viral image from our movement. A mother says to her child, “Promise me, you’ll be back for soup tonight,” as she prepares her 13- or 14-year-old child for possible street battle with the riot police.
